TunnelBear VPN – Browse Privately and Escape Censorship

TunnelBear VPN for Chrome is a lightweight browser extension that continues the tradition of TunnelBear’s full-featured VPN applications for OS X, Windows, iOS, and Android. Founded in 2011 and headquartered in Toronto, Canada, TunnelBear works with tunneling servers in over 20 countries to keep you secure on the web.

Established in 2011 and based in Toronto, Canada, TunnelBear works with tunneling servers in over 20 countries to keep you secure on the internet. While providing an excellent VPN that offers great value for money, the company also delivers it service with a warm and attractive attitude ever.

You can jump onto TunnelBear VPN by joining any of the three available plans on offer: Little, Giant, and Grizzly. No, we are not making that up!

Little is the free plan that allows you use up to 500MB free data every month. On the other hand, Giant plan gives you unlimited data at a $7.99 per month charge. Finally, you can pick up a great deal with Grizzly, a plan that offers unlimited data at  $49.99 per year ($4.16 per month.)

TunnelBear accepts payment by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and bitcoin.

How it Works

Of the VPN extensions we tested on Extension Zone, TunnelBear VPN has one of the best-written privacy policies yet. They clearly outline the minimal information they keep, and also explain what they do with it.

The company has a strict no-log policy in place, implying that it does not monitor or save any data concerning the online ventures of its users. This system wins a lot of good points in our books.

However, this does not guarantee your safety as TunnelBear VPN is based in Canada, In its privacy policy, TunnelBear states that “by using its service, you authorize the provider to use your information according to Canada’s laws.” This is not a bit reassuring, as Canada is part of the notorious Five Eyes Alliance.

On the technical side, TunnelBear VPN uses the OpenVPN protocol with AES-256-CBC data encryption.

Even more, TunnelBear VPN features another security feature: the kill switch. The kill switch drops your internet connection if your TunnelBear VPN is disrupted.

Unfortunately, TunnelBear is strongly against P2P connections, so if you are big on torrents, this is not for you.

The speed tests were TunnelBear VPN most major flaw. While the connection was smooth and without DNS and IP drops, the internet connection was considerably slowed by the VPN. Tests with the VPN turned on returned speeds with at least a 15mbps drop from connections without a VPN.

TunnelBear VPN is a minimalist VPN that is designed for ease of use while being quite fun. The company also wins points for its transparency and clear cut policy. However, the slow speeds and lack of torrent support will be a big turn off for most people.
