Hola – Unlimited Free VPN Extension for Chrome Browser

Stuck in Canada and need to watch Netflix from the US?

Look no further than Hola, the most popular free VPN available for Chrome. Founded in 2012, the Israel-based security provider has already amassed over 8 million downloads on the Chrome extension store! Even more, it has a full five stars rating overall so far.

While the extension sports a simplistic interface, it gives you access to servers in over 30 countries and unlimited bandwidth all for free (no strings attached.) By logging into the Hola website, you also get the ability to use the extension from multiple devices.

Though this is quite uncommon with VPNs, this service is free for all forms of non-commercial use. However, for commercial applications, Hola provides a dedicated paid VPN service on request.

You can install Hola as a browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, or Opera. Apps are also available on Android or iOS, and Windows PC.

How it Works

On installing Hola, we were redirected to the official site to sign up for an account. You can easily sign up for an account using the Google or Facebook web plugins.

On the primary extension interface, you get the option to select from any of over 30 server locations. We experienced a little difficulty switching between servers, but we fixed this easily with a browser reload.

We researched the companies privacy policy and found a few positive results. On the site, the developers state that “We also do not collect, store, or sell your personal identifiable information (PII), and never will.”

As customary with VPN reviews, we took a few speed tests and were quite pleased with the performance. Servers in prime locations such as the US, UK, and Netherlands performed almost as fast as a direct connection. A few other servers were slightly slower but were good enough for HD streaming.

Sure, we were a bit surprised that a free VPN could perform this well and provide so much value, so we reached out to Hola. A customer support agent explained that Hola generates revenue by selling a commercial version of the Hola VPN service to businesses.

Verdict

Right now, Hola is the obvious choice if you want a free VPN extension that gets the work done. A lot of paid options are available. However, this plugin almost entirely removes the need for a premium VPN browser extension.
